We are back from the big city!!!! Today Emma saw Dr. Roser, who had great news for us. No surgeries until she is 6-7 yo!!!!!!!!! Her lip is ok right now, and her alveolar cleft (hole in the gum line, as I call it...)will be fixed when she is about 6 or 7 and the permanent teeth have come in the front.
A couple more thing were found that we didn't know about. First of all, her uvula (the little dangling thing in the back of your throat) is cleft affected as well, but no worries there. That is the reason why she gags so easily, but she will live!
Secondly (do you say that?), her palate has a dimple in it which could mean that her muscles are not completely formed/weak underneath, and we will not know until she starts speaking English if she will need surgery. Dr. Roser said the speech therapist will be able to let us know more in detail (appt to follow on that).
Last, but not least, her right tonsil is bigger than the left, so all her right side has been affected by the cleft in one way or another.
Our last step will be the hearing check (appt to follow for that too). It would have been easier to have it all done at the same time, but of course the Army doesn't do anything the easy way, so we will go with the flow.
The surgeon will explain to us the surgery for the alveolar cleft more in detail when we go see him again after the results from the rest of the cleft team have come in, and we will decide how long to wait, etc....
But for now, NO SURGERIES!!!! It is such a relief!
Emma was a trooper at the doctor's and sat through a two hour visit, plus x-rays and pictures. She gets an A+ from me!!!!!
We are a tired mama and baby, so no pix today. Maybe tomorrow.
Love to all,
Laura

Today Emma and I are taking a field trip to ATL to see the surgeon. I will post an update tonight to let you know what he said.
Also, I am having both girls checked for melamine. If you are an adoptive parent and have brought your child home from China in 2005 and on, there might be a possibility that your child was fed the contaminated milk. International clinics are recommending blood work for the children to check their kidney function. Two children have already tested positive, and they came home in 2005, which means that this has been going on for some time now. Just something else to worry about.....:-(
'Til later.
Love to all,
Laura
